Webinar – Aligning Canadian electricity systems with net zero

The Canadian Climate Institute has published two new scoping papers as part of its project on aligning Canadian electricity systems with net zero. The first discusses opportunities to enhance the resilience of electricity systems in Canada. The second describes the waves of Indigenous clean energy projects across the country and explores opportunities to catalyze Indigenous leadership in Canada’s clean electricity future. Join us for two back-to-back panel discussions where we dive deeper into the topics covered in these papers.

Session 1: Enhancing the resilience of Canadian electricity systems for a net zero future (2:00 to 2:45 PM ET)

As Canada transitions to net zero, we will rely more and more on electricity to power homes, businesses, and essential services. While Canadian electricity systems are generally reliable today, they risk coming under growing strain as electricity use increases and as climate impacts worsen over time. Join us for a discussion about the expected climate-induced risks to electricity systems in Canada and opportunities to enhance their resilience.

Panellists:

Roger Street, Research Associate, Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford
Alain Bourque, Executive Director, Ouranos
Caroline Lee, Senior Research Associate, Canadian Climate Institute

Moderated by Anna Kanduth, Senior Research Associate, Canadian Climate Institute

Session 2: Indigenous leadership in Canada’s clean electricity future (2:50 to 3:35 PM ET)

Indigenous Peoples are at the forefront of Canada’s net-zero transition. Over the past several decades, Indigenous Peoples, communities, governments, and organizations in every region of Canada have been leaders in the deployment of clean energy projects. Moving forward, active Indigenous participation and engagement will be essential to aligning Canadian electricity systems with net zero goals and ensuring that the economic and social process of decarbonization happens not just quickly, but fairly. Join us for a discussion about opportunities to catalyze Indigenous leadership in Canada’s clean electricity future.

Panellists:

Chris Henderson, Executive Director, Indigenous Clean Energy
Darrell Brown, President, Kisik Clean Energy
Tanna Pirie-Wilson, CEO of Band Operations, Tobique First Nation
