Verna McGregor

Native Women's Association of Canada

Elder Verna McGregor is from the Algonquin community of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation, located about 120 kilometers north of Ottawa, Ontario. Ottawa and Gatineau are part of the unceded traditional lands of the Algonquin Nation. She works for the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) at Minwaashin Lodge, located in Ottawa. The services and resources provided by NWAC contribute to the empowerment of Aboriginal women in Canada. Verna has remained firmly rooted in her community and nation by being a member of the Grandmothers (Kokomisag) and traditional Elders. She also understands the importance of promoting and preserving the Algonquin language and culture, which is so important when addressing issues from a cultural perspective.
