Who We Are

The Canadian Climate Institute’s staff, board members, expert panels and advisors are located across the country. By supporting our staff to work remotely from a mix of rural communities, small towns, and big cities across the country, we’re able to recruit the strongest candidates to our team, while ensuring our research, analysis, engagement and recommendations reflect both national breadth and nuanced regional perspectives.

Staff

Our research team is made up of experts and analysts in three primary research areas: clean growth and competitiveness, clean electricity, and climate risk and resilience. They are supported by public affairs, communications, and operations professionals.

Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors includes representatives from industry, finance, philanthropy, academia, and Indigenous communities and spans political parties and perspectives.

Expert Panels

Our expert panel review processes ensure our research and policy recommendations are highly credible, based on robust methodologies, and grounded in the best available evidence.

The three panels consist of independent, non-partisan, subject-matter experts from across Canada who specialize in fields including economics, climate change adaptation and mitigation, Indigenous knowledge, natural and social sciences, public policy, energy systems and engineering.

Council of Advisors

Our Council of Advisors includes representatives from steel, cement, fuel and other heavy industries; the financial and investment sector; and development, infrastructure and cleantech companies. They also  provide input, feedback and guidance related to the Institute’s work.

The Institute is proud to be part of the Government of Canada’s 50 – 30 Challenge. The goal of the program is to challenge Canadian organizations to increase the representation and inclusion of diverse groups within their workplaces, while highlighting the benefits of giving all Canadians a seat at the table.

Our History

The Canadian Climate Institute formally launched in January 2020 following the Canadian government’s Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change and subsequent call to establish an arm’s-length organization of Canadian experts providing independent research and policy advice on clean growth and climate change for decision makers across the country.

Initially branded the Canadian Institute for Climate Choices, the institute was established to perform a similar role to independent advisory bodies in other countries, such as the United Kingdom’s Climate Change Committee and France’s Haut Conseil pour le Climat.

The proposal was supported by 15 organizations—including universities, environmental groups, and research institutes—and selected through a competitive process, resulting in a contribution agreement with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The Canadian Climate Institute became a registered charity in 2021.
